The longstanding art and office supply store closed its downtown Santa Cruz location to consolidate everything into its Capitola store on Jan. 1. The merger of the two branches marks the end of the 71-year existence of the Downtown Santa Cruz location.

Palace Art relied heavily on foot traffic created by the movie theatre, restaurants and UC Santa Cruz Students. However, due to the pandemic the movie theatre is closed, restaurants are take-out only and fewer students are returning due to online classes.

Although the ownership is sad about the downtown closure, they do believe the Capitola store will allow for more flexibility, plenty of parking and more space, which means they will be able to carry a broader selection of products.
